Brushing the Surface (Judy Melvin: 2.5 day)
Skill Level: Intermediate
The pointed brush is an amazing tool for the beginning or experienced lettering artist. Versatility, speed & movement are some of the advantages of the pointedbrush — not as easily achieved with the nib or ruling pen. Whether workingsmall, medium or large, wild or exotic, formal or casual, we will test the brushes. From pressure — similar to pointed pen or roundhand — to working withoutlines and writing over most any surface due to the light touch of the brush,it truly is a versatile tool. Basic strokes and warmups for a script alphabetand another simple brush ductus will help to develop a personal style andencourage you to create your own magic! Time will also be spent to testa variety of surfaces and media for future reference, and actually writing wordsand quotes…perhaps some to be treasured.
Supply List:
Brushes: one Pentel, Niji or Koi Waterbrush (fine)(to get the feel of the brush);and one of these choices in Size 2: Sable Winsor Newton Series 7 or Escoda Round W/C brush or Winsor Newton Sceptre Gold II Series 101 or Connoisseur Series 007 (only synthetic brushes can be used with bleach)Inks: Moon Palace or Yasutomo Sumi ink, or you favorite.
Paper: Layout bond/or laser bond (office paper at least 11×14); a few sheets tracing paper; colored, black, rough & smooth; marbled paper or any papers you want to test, especially Canson or colored papers.
Other supplies: water containers; paper towels; gouache 1-2 colors; small palette or containers for gouache and ink; Pro white or Dr. Martin’s Bleed proof white; tool box supplies (anything you can’t live without); Xacto knife; eraser; newspapers (if driving )

About the instructor: Judy Melvin’s lifelong passion for art started with crayons and advanced to inks, paints, pens, and a combination of all in mixed-media layering. She enjoyed a twelve-year career with American Greetings Corporation as a design and lettering artist. Judy teaches design, mixed-media, and brush lettering workshops throughout the US and Canada and has served as faculty at many International Lettering Conferences. She has also taught as faculty of Literally Letters at Ghost Ranch, New Mexico, and Letters California Style 2009. Judy practices what she teaches – a unique version of fine artwork that incorporates and often begins with lettering layered with mixed media. Her work has been published and exhibited throughout the US, Canada, Austria, and is in numerous collections worldwide.
