Luscious Layered Lettering (Kristin Doty: 2.5 day)
Experience Needed: No watercolor, gouache, or colored pencil experience is necessary. Students should know one hand or at least have some calligraphic experience with a broad edged nib.
Watercolor, gouache, and calligraphy have long been partners in colorful, magnificent works. Add a bit of colored pencil, gesso or pastel to the ingredient list and you have a recipe allowing luscious layering to occur.You will learn how to use and combine watercolor, gouache, colored pencil and lettering effectively… and avoid mud! Basic watercolor, gouache, and colored pencil techniques will be discussed, demonstrated and practiced, including some color theory; then letterforms will be combined and layered with different media to create interesting effects. Students will have some individual instruction. Tips will be shared and the steps involved in creating several different artworks will be discussed with examples.
Supply List: Medium size watercolor brushes (#6-#10 rounds, ½”-1” flats); C-1 Speedball nib + holder; your favorite calligraphy nibs + holders; nib loading brush and old synthetic brush; waterproof ink (sumi or India); 1” masing tape; board for support (at least 11×15 plywood, masonite or gatorboard); 1-2 sheets watercolor papers cut in quarters to 11×15, must be 100% cotton #140 (your favorite surface HP, CP or Soft Press); water containers; paper towels; colored pencils (if you have – 12 color set is fine); pencil & eraser; favorite short quotation; apron. Optional: unusual calligraphy tools (ruling pens, ruling writer, butterfly); your favorite gouache color and/or watercolors; additional sheets of your favorite 100% cotton watercolor paper.
Supply Fee: $20-$25 includes two take-home palettes with artist quality watercolors, gouache, a small assortment of watercolor papers, handouts, other items provided by the instructor.
About the instructor: Kristen Doty has a passion for calligraphy, drawing, and painting. She obtained and continues her art education by taking classes and workshops in the US, Canada, and Europe, and by studying art books, magazines, and originals in galleries and museums. Her original works have been in juried exhibitions and her paintings, illustrations, and lettering have been published in magazines and books, and as prints, posters, greeting cards, logos, and book titles. She enjoys sharing her passion by teaching workshops across the country and abroad. Her teaching emphasis is to promote learning in a fun, encouraging, and relaxed atmosphere while also building a solid knowledge of techniques and developing skills students can utilize and integrate in their own work.
